Below are the minutes from the Contemporary Fine Art student meeting, discussing possible activities for the marketing day plan.

Marketing Day Meeting- Tuesday 5th November

10:20 am

Attendees- Megan Cox, Karen Flecknell, Annabel Evans, Linda and Claire

Apologies for non-attendance- Sue and Callum

During this meeting we will:

  • Give ideas from each participant
  • Discuss these ideas
  • Vote upon the most suitable idea
  • Discuss resources and planning
  • Delegate Jobs

Suggestion from myself- A spray painting activity to teach a technique shown on youtube on how to create realistic outer space scenes, it’s a fun activity and always comes out looking effective regardless of the time limit. This would be a large scale group piece where students divide the paper into sections and each student uses spray paints and saucepan lids to create their own space scene, these would blend together to create a diverse abstract scene which looks very effective.  The materials required for this activity would be various cans of spray paint, it would be an activity taking place in the downstairs studio space with the doors open for necessary ventilation. We would use circle templates or saucepan lids to create planets and I would show at the beginning my own examples I created over summer and the youtube tutorial, it’s a quick activity that takes around 2 hours which would fit in our time frame, it dries quickly and looks amazing when completed.

Suggestion from Linda- A group installation idea to create a den from natural objects like twigs and leaves and branches, her second suggestion was more health and safety conscious and more contemporary which was for students to come into the room and create a forest floor installation inspired by Andy Goldsworthy, we would provide an array of natural objects like leaves and twigs and berries. It would be a big autumn canvas with 3D element which we would interact with them and help them create.

Suggestion from Claire- Students would create a “kinetic art machine” like a doodle daisy or a bottle of paint on a string. It’s an ambitious idea to get students to create a moving way of making art and to make art in a short space of time using found materials.

Suggestion from Annabel- Students will create a large scale drawing and mark making piece using black and white chalks, paint and inks and charcoal. This would be influenced by synthetic and organic shapes and be followed by a verbal discussion and feedback from the students. This suggestion seems the most realistically achievable on a small budget.

Suggestion from Karen-  students will participate in a still life drawing session, creating individual work to  show each students style. We’d bring in easels and boards and make a simple but interesting still life and create timed drawings using different materials and give the students view finders to use.

Discussion on the pros and cons of ideas:

  • Mine and Claire’s ideas would work out too expensive especially with larger groups.
  • Linda’s idea is fun but maybe too contemporary to use and wouldn’t take up enough time.
  • A combination of Karen and Annabel’s idea would work best, and would showcase what we do on this course. It would also not cost too much because we could locate materials from around college and we already have a large roll of brown paper to use, it will be a large scale mark making activity with smaller individual timed drawings as Karen suggested.

After discussing the pros and cons of our ideas we have decided upon a combination of ideas from Karen and Annabel, a large scale mark making activity followed by 5 minute individual drawings followed by group discussion.

Job delegation:

Linda- photographing the activity

Me- Creating the power point presentation and providing examples of previous work

Annabel and Karen- Sourcing materials from around college

Claire- Preparing the canvas’s for students to work on and setting up the space

All of us will write our own individual lesson plans and assist during the activity and the clearing of the activity.

Session direction

Topic:
Large scale drawing to market FDA course to prospective students
Lesson Aims:

To introduce potential students to the kinds of work we do on this course including a short power point explaining today’s task and also showing examples of work we have done throughout the year to provide them with an insight into the course aims. Students will have completed at the end a large scale group mixed media piece influenced by synthetic and organic matter using a range of materials to experiment with different styles of mark making. Students will also have 3-5 smaller drawings of sections of this piece to keep for their future portfolios and to encourage them to show their own drawing styles. Students will work in a group and independently on this task, to show them how diversely we work whilst studying this course. Students will discuss with current FDA students at the end of the 2 hours how they think the activity went and feedback on their experience and what they have learnt.

Generic learning outcomes: By the end of the session, learners will be able to- Differentiated learning outcomes: Learners with more advanced current skills will be able to-
Take part in both a large scale group activity to experiment with materials and mark making techniques and an individual controlled drawing task to showcase their individual drawing styles.

Be able to use a range of mark making techniques to create interesting abstract forms based upon synthetic and natural forms.

Be proactive in a large scale group activity and show leadership qualities by directing the practical outcome so that it shows intelligence and skill

Produce more than the expected 3-5 more detailed drawings and contribute more to intelligent artistic discussion.
