This chair was described as a special refuge from the strains of modern living, and it was designed with comfort in mind, they based it on a baseball glove because they thought about how the ball sinks comfortably into the soft fabric, the way a human should feel cupped in a chair 🙂 They researched how people sat on chairs and what materials people like.
We watched a video, detailing various aspects of furniture design in the 1960’s, in all honesty i didn’t find it very interesting. It showed how plywood was used in furniture in the 1960’s and how designers looked to the environment for inspiration.
We next looked at the power of the sports car, in 1946. How it was a symbol of masculinity but also how the colour affected the symbol. This car was RED, red meant passion, bold, power and strong, it could also reference love and anger but it shows how the colour of a product can affect its target market. The sound of the car, being a roaring sports car, gave a sense of power that was specifically aimed at men. The whole idea of the muscle car, relates to aiming a product at a specific gender, male. This is all to do with design, sex and consumption and how design is affected by sex, and how this affects how well it sells.
We also looked at Designer Allen Jones, who created the iconic chair featuring a womans body as the main component, it references sexuality and it provokes you to make a judgement, my first judgement was oh my god thats hideous, it is really, its quite tacky. but its shocking and thats the aim, because i suppose in this era women perhaps felt objectified in this way, like mere household objects there to please a man when he arrives home from work, yet inanimate when not in use. It was part of the pop art movement.
He also made other furniture in this style, all of them objectifying women in sexual clothing, or no clothing at all, as inanimate objects that need a man to use them to give them a purpose.
We looked at Robert Crumb who is an American Cartoonist and musician, his work is a satire of american contemporary culture. He founded a magazine called Weirdo, in 1981 and he illustrated in it. He started out doing commercial drawings but got fed up and began taking drugs, specifically LSD, which allowed him to produce stranger drawings and he spoke of a psychedelic consciousness. , he drew felix the cat and his later illustrations were all in the same cross hatch-y style :
